Overview
Sword Art Online is a Japanese anime series that follows Kazuto Kirigaya, a gamer known as Kirito, who logs into the virtual reality world of Aincrad only to discover that he and thousands of other players cannot log out. Trapped inside the game, they must fight their way through its one hundred floors, knowing that death in the game means death in real life.
Based on the light novels by Reki Kawahara and animated by A-1 Pictures, the series moves from the floating castle of Aincrad to new virtual worlds such as ALfheim Online and Gun Gale Online, and later to the Underworld of the Alicization arc. Across its run it mixes sword action, romance and science fiction, following Kirito and Asuna as they build a life together across both virtual and real worlds.
