Overview
The Gutsy Frog is a classic comedy anime from 1972 that still charms more than fifty years after it first aired. It follows Hiroshi, a schoolboy who is a little lazy about his studies and his daily chores. One day, while standing up to his bullies in Shakujii Park in Nerima, Tokyo, Hiroshi trips and falls flat on top of a frog named Pyonkichi. The accident squashes Pyonkichi into a “flat frog,” and the frog’s image and spirit end up printed on the front of Hiroshi’s shirt.
From that day on, Hiroshi has to wear that one shirt every single day, because it is the only one he has kept in good shape, and Pyonkichi comes along for the ride. The frog can move the shirt however he likes, which leads to constant chaos, jokes and unexpected trouble for Hiroshi, but the two also grow into genuine friends. Across 103 episodes, the show mixes schoolyard comedy, family life and small everyday adventures, all built around one unforgettable idea: a boy who literally wears his best friend.
