Parasyte: The Maxim is a tense science-fiction horror series about an ordinary school student who ends up sharing his body — and his life — with an alien creature. Overview
The story begins when small, worm-like parasites fall to Earth and take over human brains, turning their hosts into shape-shifting predators. Shinichi Izumi is attacked in his sleep, but the parasite fails to reach his brain and instead takes over his right hand. That parasite, who names himself Migi, can think, speak and change form, yet he does not understand human feelings at all.
From that night on, Shinichi and Migi are forced into an uneasy partnership. Shinichi must hide Migi from his family and friends, survive attacks from other parasites, and decide how far he is willing to go to protect the people around him. As the danger grows, so does the central question of the series: if a human starts to think like a parasite, and a parasite starts to care like a human, where is the line between them?
The series builds its horror slowly. Much of the fear comes not from sudden attacks alone, but from the idea that anyone — a teacher, a classmate, a parent — could already be something else. At the same time, the friendship between Shinichi and Migi gives the show its warmth and its humour, and it is that strange bond that keeps viewers watching through the darker episodes.
