Overview

Grave of the Fireflies is Isao Takahata’s devastating Studio Ghibli film about two children trying to survive the final months of World War II. Fourteen-year-old Seita and his younger sister Setsuko are orphaned when their mother is killed in an air raid on Kobe, and with their father away at war, they are left to fend for themselves.

After a falling out with their aunt, the siblings move into an abandoned bomb shelter, where their small joys — fireflies caught in a jar, a tin of fruit drops — sit alongside hunger and exhaustion. The film never looks away from how ordinary people, not just soldiers, bear the cost of war, and how pride, grief and a lack of help can turn a desperate situation into a tragedy.

It is one of the most moving animated films ever made, and also one of the hardest to watch. Its power comes from its quiet, everyday details: a shared meal, a sister’s smile, a brother doing his best when his best is not enough.
