Overview
Doraemon (2005) is the current, long-running television run of Japan’s beloved robot-cat series, which began on TV Asahi on April 22, 2005. It follows the setup that made the character a household name: Doraemon, a robot cat sent back from the 22nd century, arrives to help the unlucky schoolboy Nobita Nobi, pulling futuristic gadgets such as the Anywhere Door, the Bamboo-Copter and the Time Machine from the fourth-dimensional pocket on his stomach. Nobita’s everyday problems, and his habit of misusing the gadgets, turn each short episode into a gentle comedy about friendship, honesty and responsibility.
Rather than continuing the earlier run, the 2005 series relaunched the show with a new voice cast, led by Wasabi Mizuta as Doraemon and Megumi Oohara as Nobita, and a brighter, modern look, while keeping the world of Nobita, Shizuka, Suneo and Gian intact. Still airing today, it is the version of Doraemon most viewers around the world now recognize, and it carries on the legacy of Fujiko F. Fujio’s manga, which first appeared in 1969.
