What would you do if your mobile phone could tell you the future — and twelve strangers with the same power were trying to kill you? That is the nightmare Yukiteru Amano wakes up in, in Future Diary, the 2011 anime adaptation of Sakae Esuno’s manga Mirai Nikki. Dark, tense and famously unpredictable, it turns an ordinary schoolboy’s diary habit into a battle for survival — and for the throne of God.
Overview
Yukiteru Amano is a shy, friendless middle-schooler who would rather watch life from the sidelines, narrating it into his phone diary, than take part in it. His only companions are imaginary: Deus Ex Machina, the god of time and space, and his assistant Murumuru. But Deus is dying, and he needs a successor. So he turns the diaries of twelve people into “Future Diaries” — phones that record events before they happen, each one shaped by its owner’s personality — and sets them against each other in a survival game. The last one alive becomes the new god.
Yukiteru’s diary, the Random Diary, predicts his surroundings in fine detail. It is powerful, but useless on its own — because it cannot predict what he himself will do. That weakness is where Yuno Gasai comes in. Yuno, a classmate with a diary that tracks Yukiteru’s every move, attaches herself to him with terrifying devotion, and the line between protector and threat dissolves fast. Across 26 episodes, alliances form and collapse, diary holders hunt each other through schools, hospitals, temples and burning cities, and every revealed future changes the future itself. Future Diary is not a gentle watch — it is violent, paranoid and emotionally extreme — but it is also gripping, because at its centre is a simple question: how far would you go to stay alive, and who would you become along the way?

Yuno is Yukiteru’s classmate and fellow diary holder. Her diary tracks Yukiteru’s actions ten minutes into the future, and her obsessive devotion to him — protective one moment, terrifying the next — made her one of anime’s most iconic characters and a byword for the “yandere” archetype.
