Overview

Princess Mononoke is Hayao Miyazaki’s epic Studio Ghibli film about a young prince caught between a forest and the people who want to tame it. Ashitaka, cursed by a demonised boar god, travels west in search of a cure and walks straight into a war: on one side, San, the girl raised by wolves who defends the forest; on the other, Lady Eboshi, whose ironworks give work and shelter to outcasts while cutting deeper into the wild.

What sets the film apart is that it refuses to pick a simple villain. Eboshi is ruthless toward the forest, but she is also compassionate toward her own people. San is fierce and loyal, but her anger leaves little room for compromise. Ashitaka, caught in the middle, tries to see both sides with clear eyes, and that struggle gives the film its weight.

The animation is stunning, from the towering forest spirits to the quiet, glowing kodama. Beneath the adventure is a question the film never fully answers, and that is why it still resonates: how do people live alongside nature without destroying it, or being destroyed by it?
