Overview
Slam Dunk starts with Hanamichi Sakuragi, a tall, hot-headed high-school student whose luck with girls is famously terrible and whose reputation for fighting arrives before he does. Everything changes when he meets Haruko Akagi and, desperate to impress her, agrees to join Shohoku High School’s basketball team. The catch is simple and funny: Hanamichi has never really played basketball, and he has to learn the game from the ground up while his teammates are already chasing a place at the national level.
What follows is a classic underdog sports story with a lot of heart. Hanamichi’s raw athleticism, stubborn pride and refusal to quit slowly turn into real skill, especially his rebounding, while the team around him — the cool and gifted Kaede Rukawa, captain Takenori Akagi, point guard Ryota Miyagi and sharpshooter Hisashi Mitsui — learns to trust him. Slam Dunk works because it treats practice, teamwork and small improvements as seriously as the big matches, and because its comedy never hides how much these players want to win.
