Overview
On a tiny desert island in the middle of nowhere, a starving hyena named Zig has exactly one goal in life: to eat Marina, the mermaid who sunbathes on the rock in the lagoon. Standing between Zig and his lunch is Sharko, Marina’s devoted shark bodyguard, who treats every one of Zig’s schemes as a personal insult. That simple setup powers Zig & Sharko, a French slapstick cartoon created by Olivier Jean-Marie that has been running since December 21, 2010.
What makes the show so easy to pick up is that it barely uses words at all. The comedy is pure visual chaos: disguises, traps, volcanic eruptions, runaway beach gear and Sharko arriving at exactly the wrong moment for Zig. Episodes run about seven to eight minutes, so a single sitting can cover a whole string of Zig’s failed plans without ever getting old.
Across its four seasons, the island slowly fills out with extra faces, from a goofy king to a lovesick volcano god, but the core triangle never changes. Zig schemes, Marina stays blissfully unaware, and Sharko saves the day, usually by flattening Zig first.
