Ultraviolet: Code 044

Overview

In the year 2140, the world of Ultraviolet: Code 044 is run by a powerful corporate government, and its most feared weapon is a young soldier known only as 044. Created through gene manipulation using a virus, she is unmatched in combat — but her extraordinary strength comes at a terrible price. Every battle brings her closer to the end of a life that was designed to be short, and the days she has left are literally numbered.

Caught between the government that made her and the rebels known as the Phage, who are fighting for independence from corporate rule, 044 begins to question the orders she has always obeyed. Directed by Osamu Dezaki and animated by Madhouse, this 2008 science-fiction action series is a melancholy story about a weapon learning what it means to be human — and about how much a single life is worth when it has an expiry date.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ultraviolet: Code 044 about?

It follows 044, a genetically enhanced soldier in the year 2140 who serves a corporate government. Her virus-based enhancements make her the strongest fighter around, but they also mean her life is running out — and as she crosses paths with the Phage rebels, she starts to question who she is really fighting for.

How many episodes does Ultraviolet: Code 044 have?

The series has a single season of 12 episodes, each around 24 minutes long. It aired from 1 July 2008 to 16 September 2008.

Is Ultraviolet: Code 044 available in Hindi, Tamil or Telugu?

No Hindi, Tamil or Telugu dub is currently confirmed on a legal streaming platform in India. JustWatch India lists no streaming option for the series in India at all, so we cannot recommend a dubbed version right now.

Do I need to watch the 2006 Ultraviolet film first?

No. The anime tells its own self-contained story about 044 and her numbered days, so you can start with the series directly and follow everything without any prior viewing.
