Overview
True Beauty is a 2020 South Korean romantic comedy-drama from tvN, adapted from Yaongyi’s hugely popular webtoon of the same name. It follows Lim Ju-kyung, a high-school student who has spent years being bullied and judged for her looks, and who decides to take control of her image the only way she knows how: by teaching herself makeup through online tutorial videos.
At her new school, Ju-kyung’s flawless makeup earns her instant admiration and the nickname of a “goddess.” But the praise comes with a constant fear: that someone will discover what she looks like without it. Caught between two very different boys — the quiet, aloof Lee Su-ho and the warm, rebellious Han Seo-jun — she has to decide how much of her real self she is willing to let anyone see.
Beneath the comedy and the love triangle, the show is really about self-worth and the pressure of beauty standards. Ju-kyung’s journey is less about becoming pretty and more about unlearning the idea that she was worthless — and realising that the people who matter will like her with or without the makeup.
