Overview

Long before Scooby-Doo became a franchise with dozens of spin-offs, there was one van, five friends and a very hungry Great Dane. Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! follows Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby as they criss-cross the countryside in the Mystery Machine, stopping whenever a supposedly haunted house, abandoned mine or spooky funfair turns out to be hiding a mystery. The formula is delightfully simple: a creepy legend scares everyone away, the gang splits up to look for clues, Shaggy and Scooby stumble into trouble (and snacks), and the monster is finally unmasked as an ordinary person with an ordinary, greedy motive.

Created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears for Hanna-Barbera, the series first aired on September 13, 1969. Its charm has never really been the scares, which are gentle and cartoonish, but the friendship at its centre. Fred keeps the plan together, Velma finds the clue everyone else missed, Daphne lands in (and out of) danger with remarkable calm, and Shaggy and Scooby provide the comedy — and the appetite. The catchphrase moment, when the villain is revealed and complains that they would have succeeded if not for those meddling kids, became one of the most quoted endings in cartoon history.
