Overview
Made in Abyss begins in Orth, a town built around the edge of a vast, unexplored pit known as the Abyss. Riko is a young orphan who dreams of becoming a White Whistle, one of the legendary cave raiders who venture deepest into the pit. When she finds Reg, a mysterious boy with a mechanical body and no memory of his past, her dream suddenly has a direction: the two of them decide to descend together in search of Riko’s mother, who disappeared into the Abyss years before.
What makes the series so striking is the contrast at its heart. The world above is bright and full of wonder, with strange creatures and beautiful landscapes at every layer, yet the deeper Riko and Reg go, the more dangerous and unforgiving the Abyss becomes. A curse punishes anyone who climbs back up, so every step down is a commitment. It is an adventure about curiosity, friendship and sacrifice, told with a warmth that makes its darker moments land all the harder.
