Overview

Berserk (1997) follows Guts, a wandering mercenary whose enormous sword and scarred past set him apart from every soldier he meets. After losing a duel to Griffith, the charismatic leader of the Band of the Hawk, Guts joins the mercenary company and rises through its ranks. What begins as a story about swords, pay and battlefield loyalty slowly becomes something much darker, as ambition, friendship and fate pull the company toward a terrible turning point.

The series is best known for its Golden Age arc, which traces Guts, Griffith and Casca from their first meetings to the height of the Band of the Hawk. It is a grounded war story at first, full of sieges, cavalry charges and political manoeuvring, before the supernatural forces that haunt its world move into the open. That slow shift is what makes the show so unsettling: the horror feels earned because the audience has spent so much time with ordinary soldiers who trust one another.

Berserk is also famously uncompromising. Its battles are brutal, its characters are flawed, and its ending does not offer easy comfort. Viewers should know it deals with mature and violent themes throughout. For those who can handle that tone, it remains one of the most powerful dark-fantasy anime ever made, driven by Kentaro Miura’s story and a central trio whose bond is as convincing as it is doomed.
