Overview

Neon Genesis Evangelion opens in Tokyo-3, a fortress city built to withstand attacks from the Angels, mysterious beings that appeared fifteen years after a catastrophe known as the Second Impact. When a new Angel strikes, fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari is summoned by his distant father, Gendo, the commander of the secret organisation NERV. Shinji is asked to pilot Evangelion Unit-01, a giant bio-mechanical weapon that only a handful of teenagers can synchronise with. He says yes, and that single reluctant decision pulls him into a war that is about far more than monsters.

Alongside fellow pilots Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Soryu, and under the watch of operations director Misato Katsuragi, Shinji fights Angel after Angel. But the battles quickly become the least strange part of the show. Evangelion is just as interested in what piloting does to a teenager: the loneliness, the fear of being useless, the need for praise, and the difficulty of letting other people in. Its final stretch turns inward in a way few action series dare to, which is exactly why viewers are still arguing about it decades later.

FAQs

How many episodes is Neon Genesis Evangelion?

The original series is 26 episodes long, first airing from October 1995 to March 1996. It tells a complete story, though its ending is famously open to interpretation.

Do I need to watch the Evangelion movies too?

Not to start. The 26 episodes stand on their own. The follow-up film The End of Evangelion offers an alternate, more literal ending, and the later Rebuild films retell the story in a new continuity, so treat them as extras rather than requirements.

Is there a Hindi dub of Neon Genesis Evangelion in India?

No Hindi, Tamil or Telugu dub is confirmed on the legal streaming listings checked for India. Netflix and the Anime Times Amazon Channel list the series in Japanese audio, with subtitles available.

Why is Evangelion still so talked about?

Because it starts as a mecha action series and ends as a psychological study of its own characters. Its mix of giant-robot battles, religious imagery and raw honesty about depression and self-worth made it a landmark that later anime kept measuring itself against.
