Charlotte is a short, sharp school drama with a supernatural twist: a group of teenagers who gain a strange power for only a few years, and a student council that quietly tries to keep those powers from ruining their lives. It starts light and funny, then turns into something much more emotional, and it never loses sight of the friendships at its centre.

Overview

Yu Otosaka can take over another person’s body for five seconds. He has been using that trick to cheat his way through school and into a top academy, convinced that nothing can stand in his way. That changes when he meets Nao Tomori, a sharp-eyed student who can make herself invisible to one person at a time and who leads the student council at Hoshinoumi Academy.

Nao brings Yu into a small team of students with incomplete, unpredictable abilities. Their job is to find other teenagers with powers before those powers are exposed or misused, and to persuade them to stop using them in public. Along the way, Yu meets Jojiro Takajo, who can move at impossible speed but cannot always stop safely, and Yusa Nishimori, an idol whose body is sometimes taken over by her late sister Misa.

What makes Charlotte work is how quickly its tone shifts. The early episodes are playful, almost like a comedy about school life with a secret. The later episodes ask a harder question: what happens when a power that was meant to be a gift becomes a burden, and what would you give up to protect the people who matter to you? The ending is bittersweet, but it fits the story the show has been telling from the start.

FAQs

Is Charlotte a complete story?

Yes. The single season tells a self-contained story, following Yu from his cheating school days through the student council’s work to a final journey that closes the main plot. There is no second season to wait for.

What powers do the main characters have?

Yu can possess another person for five seconds. Nao can become invisible to one chosen person at a time. Jojiro can move extremely fast, and Yusa’s body can be taken over by her sister Misa. Each power comes with a clear drawback, which is part of the show’s appeal.

Is Charlotte suitable for younger viewers?

It is a school drama with some intense and sad moments later on, so it suits older teens and adults best. The early episodes are lighter, but the story grows more serious as it goes.

Do I need to watch anything before Charlotte?

No. Charlotte stands on its own and explains its world as it goes. You can start with episode one and follow Yu’s story without any prior knowledge.
