Overview

Doraemon (1979) is the long-running anime adaptation of Fujiko F. Fujio’s beloved manga, following Nobita Nobi, a good-hearted but unlucky schoolboy whose life changes forever when Doraemon, a blue robotic cat from the 22nd century, arrives from the future to help him. Sent back by Nobita’s descendant Sewashi to steer the boy toward a better future, Doraemon carries a fourth-dimensional pocket full of futuristic gadgets — from the Anywhere Door to the Bamboo-Copter — that turn everyday problems into wild adventures.

Airing on TV Asahi from April 2, 1979, until 2005, the series became a cultural landmark in Japan and, later, around the world, with Nobita’s friends Shizuka, Gian and Suneo at the heart of its gentle, funny stories about friendship, kindness and growing up. Voiced for most of its run by Nobuyo Oyama as Doraemon, the 1979 series is the version that introduced generations of viewers to the blue cat — and the direct predecessor of the Doraemon series that began in 2005 and still airs today.
