Overview

Gintama drops its audience into an Edo-period Japan that has already lost its war against alien invaders. Samurai swords are banned, skyscrapers tower over wooden shopfronts, and the old order survives only in stubborn pockets. At the center of it all is Gintoki Sakata, a former samurai who now runs the Yorozuya, an odd-jobs agency that will take on almost any request, from finding a lost pet to settling a neighborhood dispute.

Working alongside him are Shinpachi Shimura, the straight man trying to keep the business respectable, and Kagura, a young girl whose appetite and strength are both far beyond normal. Around them orbits a huge cast: the Shinsengumi police force, rival swordsmen, aliens, and old comrades from a war Gintoki would rather forget. Episodes swing freely between pure silliness, sharp parody of other anime, and sudden, serious arcs about loyalty, loss, and what a samurai is worth when the age of samurai is over.

That mix is why the series has lasted so long. You can dip into a single comic episode and laugh, or follow the longer story arcs and find a drama that earns its emotional payoffs. Few long-running anime balance jokes and stakes as confidently as Gintama does.
