Overview

Mewtwo Strikes Back — Evolution retells the first Pokémon film in full 3D computer animation, giving a familiar story a new visual shape. After Ash, Misty and Brock accept an invitation from a mysterious trainer, they meet Mewtwo, a powerful Pokémon created through scientific experiments. Mewtwo questions why it was made and what its purpose should be, and that search for answers soon turns into a confrontation with Ash and his friends.

What gives the film its staying power is not only the large-scale battle, but the quieter question underneath it: whether a being created for someone else’s purpose can choose its own path. The cloned Pokémon, the originals they face, and the friends caught between them all push the same idea in different directions, and the ending lands on friendship and choice rather than on victory alone.
