Twilight Out of Focus

Overview

Twilight Out of Focus (Japanese: 黄昏アウトフォーカス, Tasogare Out Focus) is a 2024 romance anime set in an all-boys school, where the film club becomes the stage for three intertwined love stories. At the center are roommates Mao Tsuchiya and Hisashi Otomo, who agree to three rules to keep their living arrangement simple: Mao will not reveal that Hisashi is gay and has a boyfriend, Hisashi will not make a move on Mao, and neither will interfere in the other’s private moments. When the club decides to shoot a boys’ love film, the two are cast as its leads, and the line between acting and real feeling starts to blur.

Around them, two more couples find their footing. Film club president Jin Kikuchihara clashes with his younger rival Giichi Ichikawa, until the two end up as roommates and discover common ground. Meanwhile, first-year student Shion Yoshino joins the club looking for a boyfriend and keeps butting heads with former vice-president Rei Inaba — until Rei asks him out. Told with warmth and restraint, the series is about boundaries, honesty, and the courage to name what you feel. Note that it is rated 16+ and deals with mature themes, so it is aimed at older teens and adults rather than young children.
