Overview
Most love stories start with a chance meeting. This one starts with an invasion. Mira is the brilliant strategist and right hand of the Evil Lord, the brains behind an organization bent on conquering the world. When he crosses paths with Byakuya Mimori, the magical girl standing in his way, he does not reach for a weapon — he falls head over heels at first sight. The villain’s grand plan for world domination quietly takes second place to a much more urgent mission: getting closer to the girl he is supposed to destroy.
Based on the manga by Cocoa Fujiwara and animated by studio Bones, The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies turns the magical-girl formula on its head. Its twelve short episodes — each roughly twelve minutes long — follow Mira’s increasingly hopeless attempts to be a proper villain while his feelings, his loyal (and often exasperated) underlings, and a pair of meddling angelic cats keep pulling him toward Byakuya. Sweet, funny, and refreshingly low on angst, it is a romance where the bad guy falls first, and falls hard.

How many episodes are there, and how long are they?

Do I need to read the manga first?
No. The anime stands on its own and tells a complete story across its twelve episodes. It is based on the manga by Cocoa Fujiwara, which fans of the show can explore afterwards for more of Mira and Byakuya’s story.
